WELL LOG DATA FROM THE ATLANTIC CONTINENTAL SHELF OFF NANTUCKET ISLAND, MASSACHUSETTS

USGS DATA SETS COST G-1 AND COST G-2

Download COST G-2 Data

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has recently released well logs and associated information from the deep stratigraphic test wells Cost G-1 and G-2. These data from NGDC (now NCEI).

The Cost G-1 well was drilled in 157 ft (48 m) of water to a total depth of 16,071 ft (4,989 m) from April 6 through July 16, 1976 by the semi-submersible rig SEDCO J. The Cost G-2 Well was drilled in 260 ft (79 m) of water to a total depth of 16, 071 ft (6,667 m) from January 6 through August 7, 1977 by the semi-submersible rig OCEAN VICTORY.

Results of the two stratigraphic test wells indicate a potential for oil and gas according to USGS reports. Also, according to the reports, source beds, which may have generated oil and gas, were penetrated below approximately 14,000 ft (4,267 m) in one of the wells. Rocks with good reservoir characteristics occur above 10,000 ft (3,048 m) at both well sites.
