Core Data from the Deep Sea Drilling Project

Leg : 14    Top/Bottom Interval(mm):  200/1500  Analyst: Benson, W.E.
Hole: 137   Sample Midpoint (m)    :   398.50
Core:  17   Top of Core Depth (m)  :   397.00
Sect:  1    Top of Section Depth(m):   397.20

LITHOLOGY: BASALT;
           GREENSTONE;

  Piece No.  : PCE NO PCE NUMBERS ASSIGNED;

  Texture : ORIGINAL TEXTURE HYALOPILITIC - HYPOCRYSTALLINE
               WITH MICROLITES OF FELDSPAR+PYX+POSSIBLE OLIVINE
               SET IN GLASS;

  Structure : CALCITE VEINS ARE WHITE, FIBROUS ZEOLITE VEINS ARE
               CLAY, COLORS ARE GREEN WITH RED PATCHES, HOW MUCH
               OF THIS IS HYDROTHERMAL AND HOW MUCH IS CLAY FROM
               ABOVE THAT HAS BEEN ALTERED AND CEMENTED IS
               INDETERMINATE, NO APPARENT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE
               GREEN VEINS AND THE RED PATCHES WITHIN THEM;

  Alteration : HIGHLY ALTERED;

  Comments : BASALT-FROM POOR THIN SECTIONS AND POWDER UNDER
               OILS, SECTIONS, EVEN UNDER IMPREGNATION, WOULD NOT
               HOLD TOGETHER TO GET DOWN TO <.006, STUDY
               THEREFORE VERY TENTATIVE;

  Phenocrysts: FELDSPAR
               LONG LATHS, MICROLITES, ORIGINAL COMPOSITION
               INDETERMINATE, NOW ALTERED TO CLAY AND CHLORITE(?)
               AND SOME ALBITE OR OLIGOCLASE;

               PYROXENE
               EUHEDRAL MICROLITES COMPLETELY ALTERED TO CHLORITE
               AND SERP, FEW MICROLITES MAY HAVE BEEN OLIVINE;

               OLIVINE
               POSSIBLY, ALL BUT THE VERY LARGEST FELDSPARS
               (PHENOS?) ARE NEARLY COMPLETELY ALTERED;

  Groundmass : GLASSY MATRIX;

  Replacement: CALCITE

               ZEOLITE
               FIBROUS;

               CHLORITE

               MONTMORILLONITE
               A MONTMORILLONITIC CLAY;

               SAPONITE
               FEW SPHERULITES FILLED WITH SERP+CHLORITE AND/OR
               SAPONITE;
