Central Pacific Ocean, Marshall Islands. Chain bag dredge. Field description: basalt
1 :
Lithology/Mineralogy: igneous (extrusive/volcanic), basalt
Comments: 4 buckets: RD59-1 - 1 bucket of Mn balls with vesicular basalt cores. Mn is 5-10 cm thick, cores are about 5 cm. One piece is a 20x15x15 cm basalt with only 2-3 cm Mn crust. RD59-2 - 3 buckets of basalt/limestone/ash (?) conglomerates. 3 boulders had clasts of vesicular basalt altered to brown, green ash(?) and hard planktonic foram(?) limestone. Some clasts are large cobbles of an earlier conglomerate with a similar lithology. There are at least two, possibly more, types of caleareas sediments present. Each of he three boulders was coated in about 5 cm Mn crust.
