Central Pacific Ocean, Marshall Islands. Chain bag dredge. Field description: basalt

Lithology/Mineralogy: igneous (extrusive/volcanic), basalt
Comments: 2 buckets: one 4x10x15 cm Mn crust was recovered. RD56-1 - 3 pieces basalt, grey with some rusted olivines, some unaltered. (10 cm, 15 cm, 20 cm~diameter) RD56-2 - one large piece (30x20x20 cm), three small pieces (10 cm dia.) extremely hard foraminiferal limestone. Borings are filled with a softer foraminiferal limestone and with basalt fragments. One small piece contains a 5 cm basalt clast with 2 cm of Mn crust. One small piece is extremely altered and heavily bored, containing only a small, hard core. RD56-3 - Three small pieces of breccia (each~5-10 cm dia.) with vesicular basalt clasts as well as soe apparently glassy fragments. All are very altered and crumbling.
